NOVI SAD, SERBIA — Serbian police are on the hunt for a man who flashed what appeared to have been a revolver during a live weather report in a move possibly intended to intimidate the broadcaster, according to a Reuters report.
The incident, which took place early Friday morning in the northern city of Novi Sad saw the as-yet-unidentified man throw the weapon up directly in front of the camera of public broadcaster Radio-Television Vojvodina.
An organization representing local independent journalists lay blame for the incident on the government, suggesting that Serbia’s ruling Progressive Party, which has been at odds with the broadcaster, helped generate a climate of xenophobia and nationalism that led to the incident.
Journalists in the country are frequent targets of intimidation, according to Reuters.
If this was indeed such a case, the intimidation proved a failure as both the on-the-scene reporter and the in-studio anchor continued their broadcast without so much as a flinch.
Police are looking into the incident and are attempting to determine if the weapon was real or not.
“This is intolerable and we will try to determine the identity of that person as soon as possible,” Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic told reporters on Friday, according to Reuters.
