What sound does the Empire State Building make when it gets struck by lightning? “Boom!”

New York City photographer Henrik Moltke captured the exact moment the Manhattan skyscraper was hit by a colorful blast of electricity during a thunderstorm Monday. A thin stream of white makes contact with the building, then lights up shades of pink and red.

Moltke also posted a photo and video of the lightning strike on Twitter and YouTube, where it quickly went viral.

PIX 11 reports the the Empire State Building is struck by lightning an average of 23 times per year, but it’s rarely caught on camera. The world’s most photographed building is considered a “lightning rod,” according.

KFOR reports Monday’s storm hit NYC during a heat wave with temperatures in the high 90s.
