Rocks the size of microwave ovens, known as “ballistic rocks,” shot hundreds of yards out of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano today. We have the latest details in this live stream.
The USGS said the ballistic rock explosions were “the most energetic explosions yet observed” and “could reflect the onset of steam-driven explosive activity.” Scientists are worried that there might be steam explosions at the volcano, would could shoot cow-sized boulders half a mile and spread ash for tens of miles around the volcano.
